I often offer film as an “extra” in my family photo shoots - I love the grain and the texture and the timeless imperfections. But most people (understandably) like the consistency of digital. So when Kelsey reached out to ask if I’d do an all film mini shoot with her husband and daughter, I was over the moon - that’s like the white whale of photography clients. So let’s talk about the bold, beautiful, and a little bit old-school: family photography on film.
Yep… real film. The kind you have to load into the camera, roll by roll. The kind that doesn’t let you see the photo until it’s developed.
I took these shots on my trusty old Canon AE-1. I used a couple different types of film but the Kodak Ektar gave me the best colors, and the neatest blues!
✨ The Right Fit
Kelsey is not your typical client. She’s an artist, a creative business owner, and an all around very cool human. (Check her out @HartHouseCreativeCo!) When she reached out she told me that she welcomed the unpredictability of film: no staging, no fuss, just her real family enjoying an ice cream cone and some popcorn right here in Doylestown PA.
Bold move? Absolutely.
Was it the right one? 1000% yes.
✨ Why Film is Actually Awesome for Family Photos
Here’s the thing about film: it slows everything down (in the best way). Instead of over-producing the moment, we got to just be in Doylestown, pop into the County Theater for some popcorn, head over to Nina’s for some icecream. It’s easy on digital to rapid-fire, hold the shutter down. But film takes time.

With film, there’s no back-of-the-camera preview. That means no stopping to fix hair, redo a smile, or “just check” how it looks. Everyone stays present. And guess what? That’s when the real magic happens.
2. Every Click Counts
Because film has a limited number of frames, we take our time. We let the wind mess up our hair. We lean into the moment. No rushing, just capturing real life, one dreamy frame at a time.
3. That Filmy Look
Film has a texture, a glow, a softness you just can’t replicate. It makes sunlight sparkle and skin tones glow. The colors are buttery. The blacks are velvety. The whole thing just feels magical.
✨ What Made Kelsey’s Session So Special?
Kelsey and her family didn’t stage anything. The didn’t match their outfits. They just wore their normal, fabulous (playful!) clothes. Jeans and T-Shirts. We let the magic of Doylestown do the rest - popcorn from the County Theater, some flowers that a tiny human may or may not have picked ;), and some heavily sprinkled ice cream from Nina’s.
We didn’t force any poses. Instead, we danced, and wandered, and threw a lot of popcorn at each other. Doylestown is the perfect place for a film session. With its historic charm, brick paths, and hidden garden spots, it offers the kind of timeless backdrop that makes film photography shine.
Every click of the shutter felt intentional. And when those scans came back? I knew Kelsey had made the right call.
